REVIEW: Six Senses Southern Dunes: A Desert Escape Defined by Stillness

Set among the dunes and mountains of western Saudi Arabia, Six Senses Southern Dunes offers a compelling interpretation of desert luxury

Saudi Arabia's hospitality landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, but few properties capture the ambition of that transformation quite like Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea. Set deep within the desert landscape of the Hijaz Mountains, far removed from the coastline resorts that increasingly define The Red Sea destination, the property offers something altogether different. Here, the focus is not on beaches or marine adventures, but on the extraordinary beauty of the desert itself.

Arriving from Riyadh, there is a temptation to assume the scenery will feel familiar. Desert, after all, is hardly a novelty for those living in Saudi Arabia. Yet Southern Dunes quickly challenges that assumption. The landscape here feels entirely different. Rolling dunes rise and fall against rugged mountain backdrops, their colours shifting throughout the day as the light changes. At times, the scenery feels almost cinematic, resembling the sweeping desert landscapes of a film set rather than anything commonly associated with central Saudi Arabia. It is a striking setting, and one that immediately becomes central to the experience.

During our stay, we were hosted in a One Bedroom Pool Villa overlooking the Southern Dunes. Privacy is one of the villa's greatest luxuries. The outdoor terrace and private pool feel entirely secluded, creating a sense of escape that is increasingly difficult to find. Inside, the design reflects the wider philosophy of the resort, elegant without being excessive, contemporary while remaining connected to its surroundings. Natural materials, warm tones, and carefully considered details create a space that feels both sophisticated and comfortable. The bed deserves particular mention, providing one of the most restful nights of sleep we have experienced at any resort in the region. Combined with the silence of the surrounding desert, it creates an environment that encourages genuine rest.

While the villa itself makes it tempting to stay put, much of the appeal of Southern Dunes lies in the experiences available beyond it. The resort has been designed around the landscape, encouraging guests to engage with the environment rather than simply observe it. During our visit, dune bashing offered an exhilarating introduction to the terrain, while an evening stargazing experience revealed the remarkable clarity of the desert sky. Removed from urban light pollution, the stars appear with extraordinary intensity, creating one of those travel moments that remains memorable long after returning home.

The resort's commitment to wellness extends beyond traditional spa treatments. During our stay, we participated in a body scrub workshop where guests create their own blends using natural ingredients, alongside a candle making experience that incorporated upcycled materials and sustainable practices. These activities provide a thoughtful connection to the wider Six Senses philosophy, one that prioritises mindfulness, sustainability, and a deeper understanding of the destination.

Wellness remains a cornerstone of the property, and the spa is among the most impressive we have encountered in Saudi Arabia. Large, airy, and flooded with natural light, the space feels expansive without ever becoming impersonal. The architecture mirrors the openness of the surrounding landscape, creating an immediate sense of calm. A standout experience was a massage delivered by a therapist whose attentiveness and technical skill quickly became apparent. Rather than following a standardised treatment, she listened carefully, identified areas of tension, and adapted the experience accordingly. It was exactly the kind of personalised care that distinguishes exceptional wellness experiences from routine ones.

Dining forms another important part of the Southern Dunes experience, with each venue offering a distinct perspective on food and hospitality. Al Sarab was undoubtedly the culinary highlight of our stay. The restaurant embraces contemporary gastronomic techniques, including fermentation and other forms of ingredient development that add complexity and depth to the menu. The result is a dining experience that feels ambitious without becoming overly complicated. Creativity is evident throughout, but it remains grounded in flavour and execution. Every dish felt purposeful, showcasing both technical skill and restraint. It is the kind of restaurant that would stand confidently within any major culinary destination.

At Bariya, the focus shifts towards freshness, balance, and wellbeing. Breakfast each morning revealed an impressive selection of healthy options, ranging from fresh fruits and nutrient-rich dishes to lighter preparations that align naturally with the resort's wellness philosophy. Throughout the day, the restaurant continues to champion clean flavours and thoughtfully prepared ingredients, creating a menu that feels both nourishing and satisfying.

The poolside dining experience offers a different rhythm altogether. Here, the menu centres around comfort food and lighter snacks designed for relaxed afternoons spent between the pool, spa, and villa. While less ambitious than the resort's signature dining venues, it succeeds in exactly what it sets out to do, delivering familiar favourites executed with the same attention to quality that defines the wider property.

What ultimately distinguishes Six Senses Southern Dunes is not any individual facility, restaurant, or activity, but the way everything works together to create a cohesive experience. The resort understands its setting and allows the landscape to shape the pace of the stay. There is a deliberate sense of calm throughout the property, encouraging guests to slow down, spend time outdoors, and engage with the destination on its own terms.

The desert location does bring practical considerations. Summer temperatures can be intense, and while the resort is well equipped to accommodate the climate, the cooler months undoubtedly offer the most comfortable conditions for fully enjoying the outdoor experiences and surrounding landscape. For those considering a visit, autumn, winter, and early spring are likely to reveal Southern Dunes at its finest.

As Saudi Arabia continues to establish itself as a global hospitality destination, Six Senses Southern Dunes remains one of the Kingdom's most distinctive resort experiences. It succeeds not through spectacle, but through atmosphere, thoughtful design, meaningful experiences, and a genuine connection to the extraordinary landscape that surrounds it. More than a luxury resort, it is a destination that invites guests to experience a side of Saudi Arabia that many never expect to find.
